GILMORE AND HENNE REACH OUT
Today’s healings reveal too many professional athletes who are irresponsible and take for granted the blessings they have. Fortunately, Berks County has two successful athletes who are making a monumental contribution.
Chad Henne, a graduate of Wilson High School and the University of Michigan (where he was an Áll American), is now in his third NFL season as the starting quarterback for the Miami Dolphins.
John Gilmore, a graduate of Wilson High School (where he was All State), Penn State University, is now in his 8th season in the NFL. He plays tight end for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Gilmore and Henne created the Gilmore/Henne Community Fund at the Berks County Community Foundation earlier this year. The fund will provide grants for local parks for repairs, maintenance and to pay for recreational activities.
On Saturday, April 24th, these two kicked off their project with a fantastic sprucing up of the play ground at 2nd and Oley Streets. 300 volunteers joined them at the playground to clean up paint, and plant flowers. They provided hot dogs, DJ Johnny V, and a surprise talent, John Gilmore. Gilmore exhibited impressive talents both as a singer and rapper.
However, the most impressive vocalist of the day was 11 year old Deja Ellison, who thrilled the crowd with an inspirational song about the neighborhood.
Most importantly, the collaborative spirit of fellowship resulted in a virtual new beautiful playground.
